Thanks fot the advice, BUT... I meant that I presumed the thing was installed OK 'fysically', power etc. Now, before I go and recompile the kernel I want to be sure that this is really necessary I'm a bit scared about recompiling the thing, I just use the out of the box standard SuSE kernel to be on the safe side. In my .config I can see that CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDETAPE=y Isn't this all I need? What else is there to be set? If this is not the problem, what could be? Maybe the old tapedrive is just broken? thanks Jeroen

Ooooh, no no no! You put a tape in and it starts whirring because there is power to the device and you have started its head positioning mechanism - totally unrelated to any software.
You need to recompile the kernel with IDE Tape device support.
You shouldn't have any problems after that.

No solution, but another problem. I have the same tapedrive, but somehow SuSE (6.3) does NOT recognise it during boot. It's not in boot.msg at all, although if I put in a tape it starts winding, so I presume the thing is installed correctly. Any suggetions?

I've got an IDE HP Colorado running on SuSE 6.3 with 2.2.14 kernel. The drive gets recognised alright - but I can't write anything to tape (because I don't have any!! ;-) But I've been assured that as soon as I get tapes everything will be fine.
do a cat /var/log/boot.msg
You should see the ide-tape device listed (in my case, it is hdc and I access it as /dev/ht0)
So, I suggest you pack your bags out of "error city" and check "/var/log city" and see what those beautiful log babes have in store for you, man! <grin>
The point I'm making - the device is supported, it should work - if it isn't working, then try not looking at the software and looking at the hardware Perhaps try different tapes.
