If you signed up for a DSL connection, then DSL modem is just an external device that connects to your Ethernet card. They may refuse to _support_ you, but there's no reason for the DSL modem not to work. And again there's no driver in the picture.
There are internal ADSL modems now that as far as I know are not supported under Linux. Thank god PacBell couldn't get their's working under my temp NT install or I would have been stuck. They gave up and left me an external modem.
