Thank you for replying, Yes, I am using a very secure set of permissions. I changed mount and umount so they have the setuid bit set. Now I am able to mount and umount as user. However, I realized that this has nothing to do with my main problem, that is as User none of my audio programs like Grip and Krabber, etc seem to be able to see the cdrom drive. As root they work fine. I am still looking at various permissions to see what is going on. I noticed that there is an Audio group and I added that to my user account, but nothing changed. maybe you're using secured permissions in SuSE. if so, SuSEconfig removes suid bit for mount and umount which prevents you from mounting/umounting hd, cdrom, even floppy. edit /etc/permissions.secure and set permissions to 4755 in mount and umount lines. in /etc/fstab, I set cdrom to ro,noauto,user,exec.

Well, this is my entry in /etc/fstab: /dev/scd0 /cdrom iso9660 ro,noauto,user 0 0
Does the /cdrom directory (or your equivalent) have execute permissions? When working with directories, 'execute' permissions are probably better called 'access' permissions...
