Wait wait wait... I think I see the confusion here. Let me see if I Can accurately describe what you've got here. A cable-modem box. There are a phone line (for outbound dialing), a coax (for inbound cable connection. That much is (probably) certain. You (by your description) have a serial cable running to the cable-modem, implying that the PPP connection for your uplink is actually handled by the PC. How does downstream data get to you? Via the serial cable as well?! Downstream would (normally) come via ethernet. Although, from my experience in the hybrid-cable-modem market, you wouldn't have to connect to the modem itself via serial, the cable-modem would handle the PPP all on its own and be transparent to the end-user. Oh yes, I do need to dial-in with this particular type of cablemodem - it's a serial cable modem. It's not one of those cablemodems with permanent connection.

Unless I am mistaken, you should not need wvdial for a cable modem. Although I have never heard of a serial one before either. Just out of curiosity, is it a permanent connection, or must you log-in and off?

Hi there,
WvDial can't detect my serial cablemodem. It works fine under window$ but it's a different story with Linux. Do any of you have any experience with this type of modem?
