I just played with YaST (version 1 from SuSE 6.2), and indeed, F6 does what you described.
However, I see why I never found it myself: it is not hinted in the help bar at the bottom of the screen. The help page popped through F1 does not speak about it either. Maybe the feature is worth being better put forward, by YaST itself?
Unless, maybe, probably, SuSE decided to wait until it works in every circumstance before publicising it? I quite understand it is difficult to identify a single source for some packages in the `a' series :-). I also easily imagine that, the crowd being what it is, a command which does not always work might cause more irritation than no command at all... After all, people who never made love do not miss it that much :-).
The funny thing is: I never knew about F6, too :) But it is documented in the online help page (scroll down to the end) There seem to be a lot of more "underdocumented" features. I should start a "secrets of YaST" page :) Have you tried to press "SHIFT+A" in the package selection screen? Perfect for applying changes to multiple packages at once...
