Yep , but now there just moving up a version , and then every one wonders where all the tuition money is going. I still think is a sweethaeart deal , as it offers M$ a chance to hook customers early on whene they are must susseptable to there FUD facter.
Now that rings a bell! My daughter took an "intro to computers" course last year in college. You are right: the textbooks and lesson plans were all geared to M$ Office97. So, we bought her a version. (Since the class covered Access as well as Word, Excel, etc., a student version wouldn't work.)
Thats the piuont , the student ends up buying a version. The system is riged , you must use the M$ product , not WP . not Quatro Pro . Therefore forcing you to buy there product.
What makes it funny (except that I'm paying tuition for this fiasco) is that when she got to class, all the computers were Macs!! The books were totally worthless... you ever try to "right click" on a Mac mouse?? Fortunately, my daughter had a Mac in her apartment, so she got an A in the course, since she was one of the few who could do all the lab exercises!!
You were lucky on that one. We have two children , so time is very tight. She doesent want to have to wait for a cpu to become avialable either before or after just to do the cource work. So if you want to be able to do it on your own convinence you need to any up the money and buy it.
(My son, on the other hand is SuSE Linux all the way!! He ended up having to help the college folks hook all the students' computers to the dorm LAN. Even though a freshman, he knew how; they didn't -- because of his Linux experience!)
I jumped into linux eith suse 5.3 perhaps 4 months before 6.0 came out. Itwwas the ONLT distro that had phone suport. Redhat only had email suport. I sprung for Suse and the tech suport cam in real handy twice. But the list has helped me out of many more situations. the varity and experties here is invalubale. ince jumping to linux , I have made a quantumleap in computer and hardware knoledge. It forces you to get a little down and dirty , and you realy learn about how the system works and how every thing is tied in together . And best of all is its perty much open standards. That I like , as well as alla the GPL and open softare around. You can do a lot aon monimal hardware and a short budget. Its real nice to be able to put to work the old Pentuim 90s and 150s , or even a 486 if you have the patience and time.
Very best, Buddy Coffey Advanced Electromagnetics
