I just tried applixware and star office an a P150/32meg ram and built in 2 meg vidio. Staroffice is a complete system hog. SLOOOOW , even slower with KDE. I removed it and am using applixware. I runs nicely with xfce and I like the fact that is has sql ability. Hopefullyu I can use it with postgress for minor database apps. I couldent get wordperfect to print in coler , something with the s rptint drivers and pass throgh postscript not suporting color. every tthing esleprints in color. This is the first machine for office use that is soly rung linux. no windows ( I allready ahve a fileserver and anm still tring to get the firewall working). So the good news is that we oo are also weaning ourselofs off of M$. It just take time and applications. Cant wait for Wordperfect Office. That I cant wait to try out. Most Windows users wouldn't notice if you put Linux on their boxes, as long as the apps worked the same.
Here's a real-life story of one organization making the transition. The company wants to get rid of old SGI hardware and standardize to one type of platform and OS. The engineers have been using the SGIs for scientific work and PC/Win machines for writing reports, etc.
Their solution was to give everyone Linux PCs with a VMWare "Win-in-a-Box" in which to run their old M$ apps. It didn't matter if VMWare wasn't as efficient as native hosting. After all, how many CPU cycles does it take to process a keystroke? :)
The engineers are delighted. They have more powerful workstations for their scientific work (done natively with Linux/X) and can still write reports, etc., with M$ Office stuff on a VMWare machine. As they wean themselves away from M$ Office, the engineers are beginning to use Applixware and/or StarOffice.
