From the Apache FAQ: http://www.apache.org/docs/misc/FAQ.html#search
Apache doesn't come with a search engine, but it can CREATE a dynamic index for you, use the INDEXES directive.
For a search engine you might want to check out
http://www.cgi-resources.com http://www.freecode.com http://www.freshmeat.net
in that order, there are allot of them out there.
Or you could build you own in a shell or perl script

I've got a disorganised collection of ad-hoc documents, split between
/www/public /www/ops /www/private
I've managed to restrict access to ops and private using apaches .htaccess (and forcing users to sign on to go browsing). However - I don't want to maintain manual html index pages on the documents, since they are continuously changing. What I would like is a search engine which will present only the documents which users have rights to see, and preferrably be an indexed search engine (because there are a lot of documents!)
Does anybody know of a linux search engine which can do this on 6.3?
Cheers,
Chris.
