Hi,
Don't use tar to do that... There is a simple trick to achieve what you
want to do, assuming that your new partition is ready and can be used:
mv /opt /opt_old
mkdir /opt
mount -t ext2 /dev/hd** /opt
cp -dpR /opt_old/* /opt/.
rm -rf /opt_old
And then the only task remaining is to modify your fstab file.
I have done this so many times and it never failed.
