I would like to convert /dev/hdb1 into an ext2 primary partition.
Did you try:
# mkfs.ext2 /dev/hdb1
That will destroy your data in hdb1 so backup first!
I don't know whether mkfs will do this automatically or not - you may have to manually change the partition type of /dev/hdb1 in fdsik.
-=-=-=-=- It does. fdisk changes only the way that the filesystem looks on the MBR, You need to run mkfs.ext2 to create the filesystem on the disk. Something like format does on dos.
Hi Chris & Nicholas,
Thanks to both of you for the fast reply. This news group is very helpful I do not want to save the info on /dev/hdb1, just want to use the entire drive for linux and have more space for SuSE 6.3. I was just concerned that I used Partition Magic
on /dev/hdb and by using fdisk it wouldn't mess up the rest of the drive. When you mentioned backup, did you mean the whole drive or only /dev/hdb1? Thanks again.

-=-=-=-=- Only /dev/hdb1. You must do something very stupid to destroy everything on your drive for permanent. I had destroyed the MBR once using fdisk. I thought I was working on /dev/hdb but actually it was /dev/hda (Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!) Yeap, but I recovered without having a MBR backup. I was able to remember the number of cylinders where the partitions started and ending so I jest recreated the partitions with that numbers and when I boot everything worked like before (Hehehe...) (But I had not created filesystems on that disk yet if I had how knows...) -=-=-=-=- Nicholas -- System info: 4:41pm up 1:42, 5 users, load average: 0.23, 0.09, 0.02 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
