Thanks for the suggestions. I actually knew about the procedures for oss and had run the installer, both the one which came with suse and a one I downloaded from 4front this evening. Neither worked, indicating a mismatch with kernel version, but failing even after recompiling. I just realized there may be a problem with the compiler/libraries and it can't recompile. Anyway, I tried the other suggestion to use ALSA, and it seems to work great. I could probably figure out the oss problem eventually, but at the moment ALSA seems to be a reasonable alternative. Anyone know of advantages/disadvantages for the two? Again, thanks for the help. Bernie Gardner On 25-Jan-00 Herman Knief wrote:
Actually it's simpler than that... just re-run the installer for OSS. If you want, you could even get the newer version that is available from the OpenSound web site.
When OSS installs, it generates a version string that is dependant on the Kernel... if you install a newer kernel, you need to re-install the OSS.

I upgraded my desktop computer from 6.2 to 6.3 over the weekend. It mostly went ok but I now can't get the sound to work. When OSS tries to start it says the version is incompatible, tries to recompile but still fails. I even tried downloading a current version from 4Front, but it has the same result. I have recompiled the kernel to support a network card, but the oss problem existed with the original kernel as well. Suggestions greatly appreciated!
It seems to me that I had the exact same problem. So, here's my solution install ALSA (use YaST and read the description file), it works super for me.
