No, lpd doesn't seem to be the problem - I installed the version from 6.2 without any improvement. After browing the docs and web sites I installed the Stylus500ph.upp, which works (although the colour saturation and dithering are poor). There must be subtle differences between the ESCP2 implementation on the 900 compared with 600 or 800 models, but I have no doumentation about this (none comes with the printer). I guess the next step is to prepare a Stylus900.upp - any advice on how to go about this? Nick Gaunt

There are problems with lpd in 6.3 - I had problems getting a DeskJet 610 working until I installed lpd from 6.2.

Hi
I know this is a recurrent question but any help would be welcome!
I have just bought a Stylus Colour 900 to replace an HP Deskjet 890cxi (which has never printed at more than a snail's pace under Linux). However, I have had real problems configuring the Epson (which uses ESCP2).
I run SuSE 6.3 with Ghostscript 5.x
First I used Yast Printer setup to replace the Deskjet driver with the StylusColour driver, using 720x720 resolution. This caused the printer to print dozens of pages with one or two widely spaced lines of nonsense per page, regardless of the file issued to the spooler.
Copying a text file to /dev/lp0 worked fine (and was veeeeery fast).
I then tried /var/lib/apsfilter/SETUP to use the unidriver and stylus800ih descriptor. This had the same effect.
I went back to yast and overwrote the styluscolour with the stylus800 driver, which worked (but only monochrome). So I overwrote that with the styluscolour driver again and now have it printing but only in monochrome!
What is going on? Why can I not get colour output? Is there any way of tracking down the problem? Unfortunately I know little about the detailed working of the BSD spooler, apsfilter or ghostscript and find the documentation daunting. Any pointers you can suggest would be welcomed.
