Well, never mind.

I thought of one more thing to test.

On a system with 64-bit EFI, I disabled secure-boot and booted with
"grubx64.efi" instead of with "shim.efi". And I got similar messages.

So it seems that the kernel is looking for shim (when on a UEFI system),
and not finding it. So probably nothing to worry about.
