Self DOS with xosview?

Hello! I run xosview on some machines to be informed about their status. Now with SuSE Linux 9.2 x86 I've go the prob that from time to time xosview does eat all memory available on the machine running the X-server to display the xosview-windows (my workstation). At the same time it may happen that from remote-machine A the xosview works correct, from remote-machine B it does not and from local machine it also does not work. Some time later when I switched my workstation off and on again all xosviews are running smoothly... Though it happens only from time to time it seems like some kind of race condition?! As I understand the mmap2-call it does allocate 943079424 bytes of memory (would be around 900MB). But there was a patch for xosview available because the structure of /proc changed from 2.4 to 2.6. To customize xosview I added the following to my .Xresources ! =========================================================================== ! Strange links, /usr/bin/[ ?

Hi, On my SUSE 9.1 I found two quite strange links as /dev/shm/Desktop/~Desktop -> /dev/shm/Desktop/ /var/lib/ntp/var/lib/~ntp -> ../.. I have no idea, what is the meaning to have the above stuff. Anyone could explain it please?! By the way I have an interesting '/usr/bin/[' file as well; is this strange name just an accident or it supposed to be like this? And why then this uncommon name? (The file belongs to the coreutils package and is present also in SUSE 9.2: http://www.novell.com/products/linuxpackages/professional/coreutils.html Thanks, Pelibali

Problems with gpg-agent

Hi all! I am on a SuSE 9.2 system tring to set up Kmail to use encryption as descriped on http://kmail.kde.org/kmail-pgpmime-howto.html I installed a standard KDE system via Yast, and added apt after that. Then i dist-upgraded the whole system to get KDE 3.4 among other things. authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SUSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SUSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security(a)suse.de), the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We disrecommend to subscribe to security lists which cause the email message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the filename of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an un-installed rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SUSE in rpm packages for SUSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SUSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build(a)suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed. Firewall problem

Hi list I hope someone can help me out of the trouble (problem has become trouble) I’m in after promoting using Linux server (SuSE standard server 8). My problem is allowing multiple pptp connection from my local LAN clients to same Win server out there somewhere. My current setup does work for 1 connection Google search gave me 2 options. 1 patch the kernel and compile (bad idea because it has to be repeated for all SuSE kernel updates). 2 Let the server create pptp connection and use some advance routing using some program from sourceforge, but this fails because of some non upgradeable lib in SLSS8 (how would you anyway start and terminate it remotely) So I went for patching my kernel with latest pom and iptables. This is what I did: Patch the kernel with pptp_conntrack_nat (KERNEL_DIR and iptables dir correct) make mrproper make clonconfig make xconfig and install the patches as modules make dep && make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install && make install make all install for new iptables (into /usr/sbin not /usr/local/sbin which was default for iptables) No errors so far and ip_nat_proto_gre and ip_nat_pptp are not loaded (they would brake my poptop server according to Google), but ip_conntrack_proto_gre and ip_conntrack_pptp are. But now I get this error “kernel: ip_conntrack_pptp: error during exp_gre” and I still can only create 1 connection (this error is only when the new modules are loaded) Help file in pom say’s: The GRE connection is marked as RELATED to the TCP session on port 1723, so all you need is something like iptables -j ACCEPT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED iptables -j ACCEPT -d my_pptp_server -p tcp --dport 1723 -m state --state NEW I have tried to put this in the custom script but get errors (iptables command missing or something like that). I have tried to get help from netfilter list but no luck (think they run away when SuSE is mentioned), but anyway I don’t want to become an expert on iptables for one issue (still have my ordinary work to do). SuSEfirewall2 / iptables log analyzer? How does iptables - SNMP work?

Hello List, which analyzer for iptables or SuSEfirewall do you use? IPTables log analyzer from http://www.gege.org/iptables/ seems to be of 2002, On http://www.iptablesrocks.org/guide/analyze.php they recommend http://www.iptablesrocks.org/downloads/iptables_logger_v0.4.tar.gz, but that needs a sql database, too - which i don't want to have on my firewall. So, sorry, there are two questions: 1) DO you know a small loganalyzer for iptables? 2) Could someone point me how to combine snmp and iptables? Shutting down my computer from KDE doesn't work - have I been compromised?

I'm running Suse 9.2 Professional and using KDE. I'm behind two firewalls, the outer one is hardware-based, the inner one running PF, Snort and Squid on OpenBSD 3.4. When trying to log out of the computer and shut down, I click on the Suse menu button and click Logout. Then, I click the button to shut down the system. This used to work fine. Lately, I've had to start doing it two times to get the system to actually shut down. Now it seems to stay up more often than it shuts down, and after the first time, I can't even get to the system shutdown button anymore. When that happens, I've been using the shutdown command in the shell to bring the system down. I should note that I have had some situations where my root partition hit 100% full, but I think this shutdown failure may have started happening before root was filled up. Hey, I just started running MythTV, and tv shows take up a lot of disk space! :-) It sounds like my system may have been compromised, or am I jumping to conclusions? If I have been compromised, does anybody know which exploit this is likely to be, or have any recovery advice? Thanks in advance, Rodney
