I don't know if this helps, but had similar problems with an SuSE 7.0 System. It seemed to hang on random occasions, after inspection it was clear that the ReiserFS was corrupted and when the ReiserFS code would try to read some of the corrupted files, the System would hang. It would still respond to pings, but no remote or local login was possible, logging stopped etc. Booting it from CD and using ReiserFScheck made the system work again.
