For graphical logins, you should take care which "Xservers" file is
actually used. Recent kdm updates on my 8.0 system changed from
/etx/X11/xdm/Xservers
to
/etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers
or
/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers
