Hi Theo --
I want to thank you, Gour, ckm, Uli and Martin for adding to my knowledge
on sendmail. However, I need to correct one error in my earlier post:
--- I said I had "sendmail" turned off. That was incorrect ----
I do have it on. As all you linux guru's know, not only was "mail"
one of the original unix killer applications, "mail"is still necessary
for the health of of and unix/linux machine.
Each Linux box needs some way to communicate --whether it be by sendmail,
postfix, qmail or one of the other mta's.
That is one of the reasons why Christopher Mahmood, in response to Gour's comment that he uses neither sendmail, nor post fix, but rather, qmail http://www.lwq.org/ quickly wrote a fake_mta package.
Aa a safety measure, Yast is set to complain if neither Sendmail nor Postfix are installed. I am sure ckm could have said what I just
said better, but I would be a shame if someone read my post,
said to him or herself because I am not using "sendmail,"
and it's a potential security problem, I will just turn it off.
---That would be a bad plan -- Enough said --
Best regards,
~Gar

Hi Uli and Martin --- <... last nite I downloaded the patch for "sendmail" However, i have my copy of "sendmail" turned off, ---- not true --- it was and is turned on ----- but I was planning to turn it on soon, when I saw Martin's post and wondered how many have switched to Wietse Venema's "postmix, which SuSE has a version for my 8.0 box, and probably for 8.1 too--- i tried to load "postfix" but it conflicts w/send mail -- so .....what to do??? comments, anyone.
Postfix is a very fast, complete and easily understandable MTA, with many (very good) anti-UCE options (90% of the arriving spam here is rejected by Postfix with DNSBL, valid host/domainname checks, domain blacklist etc.). The version supplied with SuSe is 1.1.10 afaik, the source on postfix.org is at 2.0.4 now, with a lot of further improvements and features.
Building a rpm for yourself is easy; after 'make', instead of 'make install' use checkinstall (also on the CDs) and a line for 'provides' (smtp_daemon postfix) to build and install Postfix. Remove sendmail, change two or three config variables in main.cf (well documented) and do 'postfix start'.
I for one will never touch sendmail again after experiencing the relaxed way in which I can use a complex product like a MTA in the Postfix way.
