it seems a little bit more complicated i thought:

if the file doesn´t exists on the remote site, or the file was not changed (time or size)
since last transfer, rsync works.
if the file was changed the transfer works only with text/ascii files but not with binary files!!!!:

BINARY:
mv zlib.tar.gz_test zlib.tar.gz_test2
rsync -az -e ssh zlib.tar.gz_test2 10.0.0.5:/home/carsten/
touch zlib.tar.gz_test2
rsync -az -e ssh zlib.tar.gz_test2 10.0.0.5:/home/carsten/
Segmentation fault
server-6 /home/carsten> unexpected EOF in read_timeout
unexpected EOF in read_timeout

ASCII:
echo test > test.txt
rsync -az -e ssh test.txt 10.0.0.5:/home/carsten/
echo testtest >> test.txt
rsync -az -e ssh test.txt 10.0.0.5:/home/carsten/
touch test.txt
rsync -az -e ssh test.txt 10.0.0.5:/home/carsten/

hmmmmm

it seams to work. after i´ve deleted the remote file the rsync filetransfer works.
don´t know why?!?!?!

sorry for my last mail. i was a little bit panic, cause we have some very important
cron-jobs depending on rsync...
