I have just installed SuSE linux 7.1 default installation with office. I have done the online automatic update and all security patches have been applied. Also i have activated the personal firewall and i set it up to reject all incoming requests. I was wondering though whether is this enough or is there more to be done so that my system can't be compromised Shutdown every service you don't need, e.g. portmap, NFS server, apache, ftp (or inetd as a whole, since it has some services activated in /etc/inetd.conf). An unpatched machine with NO services is likely to be more secure than a fully patched machine with lots of services! Security is always a mixture between what you need and what you can turn off.
