I installed the new rpm from the ftp site. It seems to have broken any program that calls sendmail directly. Pine, tin, mail etc. From looking around I get the feeling that sendmail should be suid but it isn't. Am I wrong and it should be just 755 ?

[...] Hi, It should be /pub/suse/i386/update/7.0/n1 from ftp.suse.com
The sendmail package. I might have gotten it from ftp.suse.de but I don't think so.

You are definitely right. Something has gone wrong - the permissions in
the rpm package are not sufficient, and /etc/permissions* entries as used
by chkstat(8) or SuSEconfig do not correct them.
To make it work, execute `chmod 6755 /usr/sbin/sendmail'. All the rest
should be ok.
In order to prevent the problem from propagating, I have temporarily
removed the rpm from the ftp server. We will have enlightenment from our
sendmail-guru Werner Fink by tomorrow.
Thank you for your feedback.
Roman.
