Is there are reason 6.4's sendmail/procmail creates the user mail files mode 600? I have a number of programs that expects it to be 640 group-id mail. I am pretty sure earlier 6.x's did it the old way. No. I'm running SuSE 6.1 and all mail folders are mode 600 by default.
Why should anybody in your group be allowed to read your e-mail by DEFAULT?
Typically the mail files are owned by user:mail, ie: -rw-rw---- 1 listuser mail 170846 Aug 6 06:30 listuser In this case that's ok (for a user to get mail, well, we'd have bigger worries).
