Usually this happens when some card operating in _full_ duplex mode
where it shouldn't starts echoing one of longer packet back to net
(which (the net) is half duplex). Thus the package collides with itself.
This retries (that is what happens after collision) untill that packets
'time to live' expires. Thus the 3-4 second dead time.

The solution is to _manually_ configure all network cards to use half
duplex. Also you should not mix half and full duplex networks without a
bridge or router.

ps. Sorry, for off topic, but the address of sender looked somewhat
misleading. Hope this helps someone else too.
