The SUSE Security Summary Reports do not list md5 sums or download URLs like the SUSE Security Announcements that are released for more severe vulnerabilities. Fixed packages for the following incidents are already available on our FTP server and via the YaST Online Update. - unzip crash due to uninitialized memory Specially crafted files could lead unzip into using uninitialized memory. (CVE-2008-0888) unzip updates have been released for all distributions. - tomcat security updates Tomcat was updated to improve the list of supported SSL ciphers (CVE-2007-1858) and to fix cross site scripting bugs (CVE-2007-2449). tomcat5,tomcat55,apache2-mod_jk were updated for all affected SUSE Linux distributions. - moodle smarty code injection problem A bug in the smarty version contained in moodle could be exploited by attackers to execute arbitrary php code (CVE-2008-1066). moodle is contained on openSUSE 10.2 and 10.3 and was fixed there. - xine sdpplin_parse problem This update fixes a bug in the function sdpplin_parse() that allowed remote attackers to access process memory out-of a buffers bound. This vulnerability can be used to execute arbitrary code remotely if successfully exploited. (CVE-2008-0073) Xine was updated for all affected distributions. ______________________________________________________________________________ 2) Pending Vulnerabilities, Solutions, and Work-Arounds - Sun Java current release Sun has updated Sun Java 1.4 to update 17, Sun Java 1.5 to update 15, and Sun Java 6 to update 5. These Sun Java updates are currently tested in QA. - Apache2 and Apache roll-up security release We are currently testing a roll-up of all pending Apache2 and Apache security issues. This update fixes three vulnerabilities, two of them are only possible if krb4 support is enabled: - CVE-2008-0062: null/dangling pointer (krb4) - CVE-2008-0063: operations on uninitialized buffer content, possible information leak (krb4) - CVE-2008-0947/8: out-of-bound array access in kadmind's RPC lib 2) Solution or Work-Around Please install the new packages. 3) Special Instructions and Notes Please restart the kerberos services. 4) Package Location and Checksums The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them. Fixed packages for the following incidents are already available on our FTP server and via the YaST Online Update. - sarg buffer overflow The SQUID logfile analyzer sarg was updated to fix a buffer overflow that can occur while handling untrusted log data. (CVE-2008-1167) sarg was updated on SUSE Linux 10.1, openSUSE 10.2 and 10.3. - phpMyAdmin multiple XSS problems phpMyAdmin was updated to fix multiple cross-site-scripting vulnerabilities (CVE-2007-6100, CVE-2007-5589). phpMyAdmin was updated on SUSE Linux 10.1, openSUSE 10.2 and 10.3. - xine FLAC security issues The multimedia framework xine was updated to fix a possible buffer overflow that can be triggered via FLAC tags to execute arbitrary code (CVE-2008-0486) and a possible buffer overflow in the matroska demuxer (CVE-2008-1161). All Xine versions on our products have been updated. - bind 1 byte overflow Certain input data could trigger a buffer overflow in the 'inet_network' function of libbind. Applications that use this function could therefore potentially be crashed or exploited to execute arbitrary code. The Bind server itself is not affected (CVE-2008-0122). - dbus-1 policy application problem The message bus dbus-1 was updated to fix a vulnerability caused by applying the policies incorrectly. (CVE-2008-0595) dbus-1 was updated on all distributions. - silc-toolkit buffer overflow silc-toolkit was updated to fix a stack-based buffer overflow in the silc_fingerprint() function which can possibly be exploited to execute arbitrary code remotely. (CVE-2008-1227) silc-toolkit is included only in openSUSE 10.3 and was fixed there. - boost regular expression problems Certain regular expressions could cause the boost library to crash (CVE-2008-0171, CVE-2008-0172). boost was updated for SUSE Linux Enterprise 10, SUSE Linux 10.1, and openSUSE 10.2, 10.3. The function emf_multipart_encrypted() that is used to process encrypted messages is vulnerable to format-string bugs. Our other products have already received those fixes. - CVE-2008-0001: Incorrect access mode checks could be used by local attackers to corrupt directory contents and so cause denial of service attacks or potentially execute code. - CVE-2008-0600: A local privilege escalation was found in the vmsplice_pipe system call, which could be used by local attackers to gain root access. - CVE-2007-5500: A buggy condition in the ptrace attach logic can be used by local attackers to hang the machine. - CVE-2007-5501: The tcp_sacktag_write_queue function in net/ipv4/tcp_input.c allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via crafted ACK responses that trigger a NULL pointer dereference. - CVE-2007-5904: Multiple buffer overflows in CIFS VFS allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via long SMB responses that trigger the overflows in the SendReceive function. This problem requires the attacker to set up a malicious Samba/CIFS server and getting the client to connect to it. No other bugs were fixed. 2) Solution or Work-Around There is no known workaround, please install the update packages. 3) Special Instructions and Notes Please restart the machine after the update. 4) Package Location and Checksums The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them. Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this announcement. Then install the packages using the command rpm -Fhv <file.rpm> to apply the update, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the downloaded RPM package. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE security announcements are published with a valid signature. To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file and run the command gpg --verify <file> replacing <file> with the name of the file where you saved the announcement. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, the authenticity and the integrity of a package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered with. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or RPM package: 1) Using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package 2) MD5 checksums as provided in this announcement 1) The internal rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an RPM package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the RPM package downloaded. The package is unmodified if it contains a valid signature from build(a)suse.de with the key ID 9C800ACA. This key is automatically imported into the RPM database (on RPMv4-based distributions) and the gpg key ring of 'root' during installation. You can also find it on the first installation CD and at the end of this announcement. 2) If you need an alternative means of verification, use the md5sum command to verify the authenticity of the packages. Execute the command md5sum <filename.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SUSE FTP server or its mirrors. Then compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the SUSE security announcement. Because the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (by security(a)suse.de), the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package if the signature of the announcement is valid. Note that the md5 sums published in the SUSE Security Announcements are valid for the respective packages only. The SUSE Security Summary Reports do not list md5 sums or download URLs like the SUSE Security Announcements that are released for more severe vulnerabilities. Fixed packages for the following incidents are already available on our FTP server and via the YaST Online Update. - Acroread wrapper script minor /tmp race Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1.2 contained a /tmp race in its "acroread" wrapper script in the SSL certificate handling. (CVE-2008-0883) This problem is not triggered by just starting acrobat reader, but only on certificate handling. Furthermore Acrobat Reader contained several duplicated copies of system libraries, which have been removed by this update to make sure they are up-to-date security wise by using the system provided ones. Also on x86-64 platforms, the Mozilla embedding detection did not work and was fixed, so the Splashscreen and Help are again displayed. Updates have been released on SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10, SUSE Linux 10.1, openSUSE 10.2 and 10.3. Updates for version 7 for Novell Linux Desktop 9 and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 are still pending. - Asterisk security issues A security update was released for the PBX Asterisk, fixing following security issues: CVE-2007-6430: Attackers could bypass host based authentication by using a valid user name. CVE-2007-6170: Attackers could inject SQL commands under certain circumstances if 'cdr_pgsql' was used. Asterisk was updated on SUSE Linux 10.1 and openSUSE 10.2. - cacti various vulnerabilities The following vulnerabilities were fixed in cacti: - CVE-2008-0783: multiple XSS vulnerabilities - CVE-2008-0784: path disclosure - CVE-2008-0785: multiple SQL injections - CVE-2008-0786: HTTP response splitting on very old PHP instances Cacti is included in SUSE Linux 10.1, openSUSE 10.2 and 10.3 and was fixed there. - compat-openssl097g security fixes This update of compat-openssl097g fixes a off-by-one buffer overflow in function SSL_get_shared_ciphers(). This vulnerability potentially allows remote code execution; depending on memory layout of the process. (CVE-2007-5135) We released updates for openssl already, but an update for the compat 0.9.7g openssl libraries was missing and is provided with this patch. Released for SUSE Linux Enterprise 10, SUSE Linux 10.1 and openSUSE 10.2, 10.3. - icu regular expression problems Certain regular expressions could crash the ICU library (CVE-2007-4770, CVE-2007-4771). Updated icu packages have been released for all distributions. - libcdio buffer overflow A security bug was fixed in libcdio. The current security update of cups fixes a double-free bug in the function process_browse_data() that can lead to a remote denial-of-service by crash- ing cupsd or possibly to a remote code execution (CVE-2008-0882). The bug can only be exploited if cupsd listens to 631/udp by crafted UDP Browse packets. Additionally two remote denial-of-service bugs were fixed. The first one can be triggered via crafted IPP packets to use a pointer after it was freed (CVE-2008-0597) and the second issue is a memory-leak caused by a large number of requests to add and remove shared printers (CVE-2008-0596). 2) Solution or Work-Around No work-around known. Please install the new cups package. 3) Special Instructions and Notes Restart the cups server after the update. 4) Package Location and Checksums The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them. Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this announcement.
