Or every x months/years anyone will start a thread with a magic solution to the versioning. Maybe 1 year will not be fun enough, so someone will suggest a 8months or 6 months concept to be sincronized with major DE's release.
Why do we need to synchronize our releases with those of major DE's? We provide (in most cases) a way to update to the latest DE with current releases, respins, etc. I am not in favor of a release schedule that is beholden to external parties' release schedules. Granted, maybe a more intuitive method of updating DE's for users would be useful, but that doesn't really make much sense for the definition of a release cycle because not all DE's release in the exact same month.
