The web frontend :)
The client frontend, I'm thinking more of something like python (for
good reasons.. hackability, ability to interface with C++, and ability
to write gtk and qt UIs easily)

1. Java backend for the metadata service, maybe for frontend
On the server use what you like, but please not a sluggish java application in the distribution. We already have one of the slowest package managers around.
