Quoting Colin Carter
I am just starting with cvs and think that I understand the documentation. But ...
I executed $cvs -d /data1/projcvs init
This gave me the apprpriate set up in the correct place.
On a different day I set the cvs root thus: CVSROOT=/data1/projcvs (and I did also try /data1/projcvs/CVSROOT)
As someone else said, "export CVSROOT=/data1/projcvs" if using bash as shell.
Then I tried to put my files in by cvs import -m"Initial code" name1 nameTage1 0.0
but I get the error No CVSROOT specified! Please use the '-d' option cvs [import aborted]: or set the CVSROOT environment variable
So I tried cvs import -d /data1/projcvs -m"Initial code" name1 nameTage1 0.0 and variations but have had no luck.
-d for CVS root is a global option, so: cvs -d /data1/projcvs import -m"Initial code" name1 nameTage1 0.0 Global options go before the command. Command-specific options go after the command, e.g. "import" in this example.
Anyone any ideas? Thanks for your time, Colin
