Jerry, I don't think that this is correct. Long before the Americans got computers underway the English military built a programmable computer with valves and relays. It was used to break the German codes during WW II. When the computer started to miss-behave they checked the equipment and discovered that the warmth of the relays had attracted bugs which prevented them from operating properly. So a routine operation was to de-bug the relays. At the end of the war the English destroyed almost every part and document because they believed that this 'machine' would never be needed again. Foolish people. Not a one-off: they also GAVE the Americans the jet engine....
