C++ question (specifically GCC)

I am defining a template class, and am having trouble with defining the << operator for that class, for example: template <class Type> class Foo { public: // ... constructors, destructor et. al friend ostream & operator<<(ostream &, const Foo<Type> &); // here g++ generates the following warning: warning: friend declaration `class ostream & operator <<(ostream &, const Foo<Type> &)' warning: declares a non-template function // ... rest of Foo }; // And the implementation template <class Type> ostream &operator<<(ostream &os, const Foo<Type> &foo) { os << foo; } I've tried a few different ways of doing this. Building 2.5 kernels on 8.0

Hi. Tried this on another SuSE list, with no response. Maybe here will be better. Having a devil of a time building a 2.5 kernel on SuSE 8.0. Linux Memory Problem, 4GB RAM

Hello, I have a linux computer with 4 GB RAM. And I want to start a job which allocates almost 4GB. But the maximum amout of memory that could be allocated for one job is about 2.3 GB. I tried already to compile a new kernel with the kernel/user space parameter changed. But no change occured. Does anyone know something about this kind of problem? Does anyone know a online IBM390 resource??

I have been tasked with porting a old Cobol app to C code. I do NOT have access to an IBM S/390 to do any debugging. I do have access to a production system that provides me with the end-results of the algorithm, but none of the sub-step level info I need. I have used the TinyCOBOL (http://tiny-cobol.sourceforge.net/) compiler to compile the original code in a SuSE based server and add debug statements. My C code now produces the exact same results as the TInyCobol version for my 100 test cases. Unfortunately, the original is only agreeing with 90% of these results and I need a 100% agreement. The code is very mathematical and it heavily uses cobol's weird fixed point logic. I need a way to compile the original code with debug statements and run it on a IBM mainfraime. Does anyone know of a resource for doing this. TIA Greg Freemyer

Greg, I have been in your situation and I know the frustration you are living with. One thing you might be able to do is talk to the IBM DeveloperWorks people and see if they can help. How to check in which state is a socket ?

Hi folks, i have a server process which collects socket connects from clients. Those connects are stored in a chain. On a special event on the server, the process has to deliver some data to the clients. So far so good, but.. how do i recognize when i client disconnects, or how can i check the state of the socket ? my process crash when it tries to send/write data on the old-socket handle. it all written in C, so there is no way to use stuff like try() catch() and i dont beleave, i should write an own signal handler for this write/send statement. there must be a clean way to check/monitor the state of the socket, but how ?

Book on Graphics programming

I have well over 20 years programming in C and C++, but most of that has been systems programming. I have very little programming in a graphics environment. I've got a couple of projects where I would like to use a graphical rather than a text interface to some existing C and C++ programs. Newbie is looking for HowTos

Hello! I am pretty new to C++ and KDevelop. I alredy did some other languages before, such as VisualBasic, PHP (LAMP), Bash, etc... But C++ seems to be fairly hard to learn. I am used to the M$ VB IDE, which is pretty comfortable. KDevelop looks be be alike, but it isn´t at all ;) I do not want to start with console apps, cause i have a project i am focusing on, which keeps me going. Can you recommend a simple tutorial/howto for a newbie such as me (the more interesting the better ;) ? Something wich shows me how to handle texfields, message boxes, Labels, new windows, etc... Its pretty much all about classes and methods, which i have never really used before. I am pretty much coming from the ClickyBunty envirorment ;) Cheers, Mario Ohnewald
