My current hardware is G4 Tower-867mhz Nvidia GeForce2. And also as a point
of reference, I would call my just recently old hardware, a G3 B/W Tower
@400mhz as kind of the minimum to get the same feeling of responsiveness,
everything runs the same, just a tad slower.
As for the services, which ones? If just standard stuff like web, ftp,
telnet, they work fine on both, and on OSX, it is a config file,
(httpd.conf, check out this article on Apache on OSX
http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/mac/2001/12/07/apache.html). The ftp and
telnet are nothing more than checkboxes in some of the configuration
scripts. If your going deeper into the services, qmail, sendmail, dns, etc,
your right, the trail has definitely been burned and well documented on the
Linux side, and works well.
Also, another piece of information, there are things like Darwin and Fink to
load those missed programs, making it real easy to add open source packages
like bash. I'm not a big fan of tcl shell, so it's one of the first things
I replaced, past that, OSX or Linux, configuration was the same.

Thanks for the answers! :dave -> "On my latest hardware, OSX is brisk and responsive, " what is your latest hardware? Only to compare it with the Powerbook 550 I like to buy. "but I do have them running critical stuff 24/7, and they are just humming along. " That's also the way I like Linux to use - as a Server. "do you want less hassle, and don¹t really care what's under the hood, " I prefer to work mainly in one system. And if OSX give's you more or less the same as Linux... : thiemo ->sorry, I didn't mean PW but PB (Powerbook) " OS X seems to me more complicated with respect to making settings by the shell " the settings aren't safed in config -files and can be edited easily ??
