I have to use the Linux kernel 2.4.17 for my Dell notebook because the SuSE standard kernel doesn't support the advanced power management. I configured my new kernel and installed it. Everything but the sound system works well. The soundcard modules are not installed in /lib/modules/2.4.17 and I couldn't find any documentation for my card. It's a Intel i8xx. Is there a work-around for Linux 2.4.17?
I'm not sure but in all i8xx chipsets it should be an AC97 compatible audiogenerator. Include the right modules for the sound in your kernel configuration and read the manual chapter about building kernels. Have you really compiled and installed your kernel modules or only the kernel itself? For support by SuSE you should perhaps use a SuSE supported kernel image and ask for help with apm ;)
