Hi,
openSUSE is no official organization. It's an open source project. The board is working on making an official "foundation" that represents the project but this is not done yet.
This is encouraging.
Can you tell us in which situation you would need a signature for what? This is the first time we hear about something like that. Please elaborate.
The relationship between distribution teams and local, national or international associations are not always so harmonic. Therefore lets take an example.
A recognized by law Linux User Group organizes presentation to a School. The L.U.G. makes a call for presence to as much distribution communities as it gets. In one of this communities there are also minors enthusiasts. One of them seduces a girl that day but something goes wrong between them.
Who is the school and the parent to blame? The L.U.G.? The minor? The parent of the minor? The open source project that is behind the distribution community? By law the L.U.G. has the responsibility. But the problem was created by one distribution community member. So the aftermath is that the L.U.G. does not want any type of relation with distribution communities any more and this is bad for the entire floss community in this country / city / region.
So, either the L.U.G. will have a Big Brother suspicious mind and will scan everybody from the distribution community - and this is bad also, or everyone will take the responsibility that she has to take.
This is one example - fortunately this has not happened - but there are many more.
We have a status like that: Membership. What do you think needs to be improved to make this more recognizable for the outside world?
Membership is ok, but I think its not enough. I would prefer to wait for the foundation to be created. I think also that the foundation should have a great "law team" in order the individual members to be fully personally responsible for their actions. Until then, of course almost nothing can stop us working the way we do today.
