I was wondering if anyone had some ideas about how to encourage more members in the community to blog about 11.0 when it's released. In previous releases I feel like this has been one of our weakest points, so I'm really interested in hearing any ideas!
Personally I've been planning my 11.0 announcement blogpost for months :-) I don't fully agree that there's too little blogging. At 10.3 time I remember thinking there was almost too much of it. At release time there was a flood of blogs and articles, drowning each other.. and a week later there was nothing. For that reason I'll probably do my 11.0 announcement post 3-4 days ahead of release to avoid it drowning in noise. I think we should think more about how to get the right people to blog in the right places - and spreading it out over time a little more. At release time of course it's easier to get people's attention. But often it's not the best time for users to install it. 3rd party packages are missing, like maybe ATi KMPs or whatnot, howtos are missing, there'll be quirks that haven't been worked out yet or workarounds yet undiscovered. I'm really not very enthusiastic about 11.0. Too much immature stuff in critical areas: - KDE 4.0 .. 'nuff said.. and lots of users will install it, that really shouldn't - KNetworkManager.. I don't believe it works very well for anyone, 95% of laptop users will hate us. - Firefox beta.. lacking extensions.. possibly other quirks. Some of these things will improve.. with KDE 4.1 availability, Firefox3 final.. and (I pray) somewhat functional KNM via online update before too long. Imo if we push 11.0 too hard, we risk shooting ourselves in the foot. I think we should be very honest about that 11.0 is very immature in many core areas that will affect almost anyone. And make it clear that 11.1 is not very far away - at least when communicating with existing users. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org
