No compose characters possible with asian language setting

Hello! I'm currently using SuSE 9.0 pro for both german and japanese input. This works fine so far, by setting the variables LC_CTYPE to ja_JP.UTF-8 and LANG to de_DE.UTF-8, but nevertheless I experienced a problem: With the LC_CTYPE set to japanese and an input method running (currently kinput2), I cannot type european language compose characters any more - at least the ones I used to produce with two sequent keystrokes ( ´ and e for é for example). The rest of my (german) keyboard layout works all fine, and with LC_CTYPE set to german, é's, à's, ô's, etc pose no problem, but then, of course, I cannot input japanese... This problem seems also to be existent for other language settings that use an input method, I tried it out with a friend who uses chinese input (also on SuSE 9.0 pro). We (my friend and I) are currently writing an article about asian language input with StarOffice/OOo, so we would really appreciate any help or hint concerning this problem. Thanks. Marcel Boeing

xemacs and chinese-py-punct

Hi, I have a Chinese coleague, who uses emacs/xemacs. We found out that chinese-py is his favourite input method. We managed to type Chinese words in emacs, but emacs does not display the utf-8 characters correctly after the file is reopened. (If I do not add anything, it displays backshlas sequences, if I add a comment in the header saying that it is utf-8, it does not display all of the signs). If I open the file in xemacs everything is fine. Also copy & past works and I can use the application I want to use with Chinese input. However the xemacs that comes with Suse 10.0 does not know the input-method. It gives the chinese-py-punct as default method, but typing enter results in an error. Do I have to install additional files? I installed all packages that seem to be related? I searched the web, but did not find anything on this issue. Thank you very much for your help! FYI: My locale was set to ja_JP. Turns out I had to remove all of the other fontconfig.*.*.* files, and the one I got from Marko Walther's weblog worked. I guess JRE was falling back to one of those installed with the JRE. Is there a standardized version of the fontconfig.SuSE.properties.src that will work with SuSE, or is the one I have (mentioned above) the "standard"? Thanks! Cory, You need to use the ja_JP locale, JPN is an older Microsoft locale naming convention. S. Hi, I am running jre1.5.0_06 on SuSE 10.0 w/ gnome desktop. I need to enable a Java app to display the JPN characters correctly. Locale is set to JPN. Now they come up as boxes. The properties files containing the strings have the JPN characters as Shift-Jis (SJIS)-encoded escape characters. This works on the Windows side, and I can't have separate string-Properties files for Win and Linux, so I am hoping we can make these work on both platforms. My assumption is I need a modified font.properties file to correctly display the strings. I have tried modifying the fontconfig.SuSE.properties.src file to contain the information needed to map to the JPN fonts on the system, but unsuccessfully. I have also tried adding in the font.properties.ja.SuSE into the directory /usr/java/jre1.5.0_06, which I downloaded from: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/pmladek/java/font.properties. I also tried changing the name of font.properties.ja.SuSE to fontconfig.SuSE.properties.ja.src, but that made no difference. I have downloaded the kochi - substitute rpm and installed it. konqueror and Mozilla development seems to diverge

When answering a mail in a language one is not fluent in, it is convenient to display the received mail in konqueror with a split window (window/Split view Left/Right).. The left portion contains the text wrapped to fit window width. and the right portion a hopefully not too large dictionary refering to unknown words of the received mail. Those words had to be looked up anyway when reading the mail in the first place. If one has already a poor short term memory like myself it is advisable to generate while reading- in case of Japanese with Gijten- a dictionary file .In principle there are two ways to do this with Mozilla- mail: One uses the mail parh with "Edit draft" and for the other one first saves the mail file, opens with Mozilla and works with the composer, using "Edit page". This all worked fine with LINUX 9.0, but does not work with LINUX 9.3, using exactly the same procedure and trying various others. If one cannot just scroll the text in the smaller split window, i.e. if it is not automatically wrapped when openend with the konqueror the advantage of this procedure is partially lost. Many weird things happen: konqueror cannot open a *.eml file, If the recieved mail was utf-8 coded one ends up with an unstructured *.asc file, which is however structured when opened with kwrite, iso-2022-JP coded files from different senders behave differently, even if with "View/Character Encoding/Customize the code is adapted to utf-8...... Unfortunately, to my best knowledge kmail does not allow one to apply a similar procedure . Any help of somebody who can look deeper into the respective codes would be highly appreciated, on request I would of course outline in detail what I have tried. Thank you in advance W.L. Engl

Hi Bryce, Try to install the SCIM packages, including M17N-t-latn-pre and (for example) SHIFT " A will give you ä, etcetera. If it doesn't work, let me know. regards, Herman

I have a SUSE 10.0 question. How can I type ü, ö and other international/special/non-keyboard/deadkey characters? I am finding no documentation on this subject. I run Gnome, and have selected in YAST: Generic 104-Key PC US English intl variant I find that the international variant breaks the ´ (single quote) key and the ~ (twiddle). Is there a way to get the ability to accent characters, or type arbitrary symbols, without loosing keys on the keyboard? I am used to the process of pressing a deadkey initiator, a combining character, then a character. -Bryce
