Patches would still need to be included in the huge kernel package
with all it's special magic and processes though.
You send the backported patch, with the upstream commit id included, to
stable@kernel.org. The rest of the process is handled by Greg :).
Or even easier, just add:
Cc: stable
to the signed-off-by: area of your patch, and when it is included in
Linus's tree, it automatically gets sent to me and the other stable
maintainers and included with no extra work for you at all.
And our processes are one of the best documented ones around, with
mini-books written about exactly what you need to do and how to do it.
