[opensuse-kernel] KOTD release numbering

Hi, (sorry for the long mail, jump to "== Examples ==" below for the important part) I'm thinking about changing the versioning of KOTD packages (http://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/) as the current scheme is a bit of mess. I'd like to 1) make the release string shorter, 2) make the release string sort with official distro kernels nicely, so that with some luck, an older kotd will be replaced by a newer update kernel and vice versa. I'm thinking about the following: drop the branch name and timestamp from the release string (same information is in rpm -qi output, no need to duplicate it here). Instead of the timestamp, use the number of commits (see below) so that the release string increases. To get proper ordering with official kernels, prepend the release string of the last official kernel. More precisely: last update kernel: $version-$release current kotd: $version2-??? if $version == $version2 $release2 = $release.$ncommits.$hash else $release2 = 0.0.0.$hash remember "$version2-0.0" as a fake update kernel and count from there next time endif $ncommits would be the number of commits to the kernel repository since the last update, $hash would be the commit id (same as today). == Examples == The current SLE11_BRANCH kotd would be named kernel-default-2.6.27.25-0.0.22.8dd1bfd.x86_64.rpm because the last released update was 2.6.27.23 and Greg updated to 2.6.27.25 22 commits ago. The next update (if the version stays at .25) will be 2.6.27.25-0.1, i.e. correctly newer than the kotd. The SL110_BRANCH kotd would be named kernel-default-2.6.25.20-0.4.23.4d35a02.x86_64.rpm because the last released update was 2.6.25.20-0.4, 23 commits ago. The next update will be 2.6.25.20-0.5 at least, again newer than the kotd. Maybe the commit id should be prefixed with a "g", just like git-describe does, to make it clear what it is. Does this make sense to everyone? Does anyone depend on the current numbering scheme? [opensuse-kernel] Nehalem kernel NUMA bug

I've dual E5520 server w/Supermicro X8DTI mobo (last June 2009 1.0c bios version). Default OpenSuSE 11.1 x86-64 kernel (2.6.27.7-9) gives an error in /sys/devices/system/node directory - there is node0 and node2 subdirectories instead of node0 and node1 (smt is turned off). As a result numactl tools don't work. I don't find the message about this error in SuSE bugzilla "database". This Nehalem/NUMA error is also known (AFAIK) for 2.6.29-6 default OpenSuSE kernel, and also in FC11 kernel 2.6.29, and in some CentOS 2.6 kernel; but there are kernels w/o this error :-) Is there some updated OpenSuSE 11.1 kernels w/o this error ? Or may be some OpenSuSE 11.2 kernels ? Hi, I have a backport 2.6.27.x custom kernel installed on my 11.0 system, running KDE 4.3. I've noticed that the Thinkpad (mine's R61/R61i) brightness control does not work through the keypad. I can change it through the Powerdevil battery manager. I have the right options put in for brightness control in /etc/modprobe.d/thinkpad_acpi. [opensuse-kernel] 2.6.30 kernel for openSuSE 11.1

Given that there are extremely severe problems with the current release candidates of 2.6.31 w.r.t. UMTS/GPRS modems -- with severe I mean kernel crashes[1] -- I tried to find a RPM of the 2.6.30 kernel for openSuSE 11.1. Surprisingly, I wasn't able to find one! Can someone give me a pointer? Or is it really true that noone provides 2.6.30 for 11.1? I'd prefer not to introduce any new differences. Hm, OK, it's a strong opinion. (BTW, in reality, the difference between default and pae isn't only about PAE and ISA. The pae kernel has many options as built-in, e.g. ATA and IPV6 while they are all modules in the default kernel.) But, let me try to whip a dead horse again. Maybe I should have started from the question what should be the difference between desktop and pae (default). As now, desktop kernel seems to have - disablement of CGROUP and GROUP_SCHED - HZ=250 vs HZ=1000 - PREEMPT_NONE vs PREEMPT My guess is that the first one is crucial for responsiveness. Unfortunately it can't be off for openSUSE-11.1 because of SLE11 requirement. This was disabled on openSUSE-11.0 due to the disastrous results. It seems that the situation got improved, but if this is really the key factor to worsen the responsiveness, we should reconsider for 11.2. About the second one, the impact by different HZ should be fairly small as we usually NOHZ is used. So, HZ=1000 can be taken for the server as well. The last one, the preemption option is another question. In my very old benchmarks, PREEMPT had some performance impact in a few %. But, the preemption can be a win in some specific benchmarks, OTOH.
