Hello Leslie, Try kaffeine --wizard. You can do self check why it cannot play. In my environment, kaffeine says:
Found: openSUSE 42.3 (x86_64). The xine-lib shipped by SuSE "may lack certain features because of legal requirements (potential patent violation)"
I think kde3-kaffeine is no longer maintained. I suggest to you to
use SMPlayer insted of kaffeine. SMPlayer has built-in codes.
If you want to install codecs, see also http://opensuse-community.org/
You can install that just one-click.

After upgrading my machine from Leap 42.3 to Leap 15 and reinstalling KDE3, when I started kaffeine it complained:
| No WIN32 codecs found in /usr/lib/win32. You're not able to play Windows | Media 9 files, newer Real Media files and some less common formats.
So after poking around and not finding the codecs in packman, I went to https://www4.mplayerhq.hu/, downloaded win32codecs-20040703.tar.bz2, and installed the contents in /usr/lib/win32:
