the laptop is a Lenovo T61, with an Intel video card. The Os is Suse 11.4, installed with a minimal X initially, then added in the latest kde 3.5. How can I make a plug in monitor work in conjunction with the native lcd?
ok, a bump from the original posting, perhaps a rephrasing of the question. up to suse 11.1 we had sax2 and it was easy to handle a dual head system. then apparently xrandr took over.... but 11.4, at least my 11.4 x6-64 , ver 2.6.37.6-0.20-desktop, does not have sax2 nor doet it have xrandr. Is there another tool i can use to add a second screen?
SaX2 was a convenient configuration tool used to create a valid configuration file to produce the desired results. Configuration files can still be used to get what you want; it's just more trouble. To use /etc/X11/xorg.conf for your purposes you'll need only Monitor, Device and Screen sections, though others might still be used for various options. Your same 11.1 xorg.conf file should work with minimal or no further modifications once you strip the unneeded sections from it and trim the Monitor section down to only what's required (Display subsections are apparently obsolete). I'm guessing, since I don't ever use dual displays, is that you may need at least one instance of PreferredMode option in a Monitor section to apply at least to the external display. e.g., on this system I use a single display connected via DVI, but the card has both DVI and VGA outputs, with VGA the default. To apply a special parameter for the DVI port in use I needed to add 'Option "monitor-DVI-0" "Default Monitor"' to the Device section, which otherwise only applied it to the VGA output. Some find it simpler to use /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ files instead of one xorg.conf. Look to the comments in those files for a little bit of guidance on what's required. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
