Hi people. I suggest you all to subscribe to opensuse-kde3(a)opensuse.org so I could send e-mails directly to this mailing list. I have several questions, suggestions and clarifications regarding status of KDE:KDE3. - First of all I have to announce that we completed for the most part moving of packages from KDE:Communitry. It has been done much quicker than by the KDE4 team. Some packages are not moved because they have problems either with build or during runtime. Some packages like ksquirrel have well-known security issues. I do not know should we include them in KDE:KDE3 or not. - It seems that some packages were disabled for Factory. Namely, kdemultimedia3 and anything related to Beagle. Please tell me the actual reason or the disabling. I can add to KDE:KDE3 repository any libraries needed for the build. For example, I can restore kdemultimedi3. Or are there any other reasons for the disabling? Beagle in particular is essential for finding topics in KDE help system. - I am planning to add some soft dependencies to some basic KDE packages to improve user's experience. For example, it would be good in my view if kdebase3-workplace recommended kde3-knemo and desktoptext-config. Also some plugins may be recommended. Please tell me if this is against OpenSUSE packaging policy. - I have long-range plans to include Qt3-based versions of Yast2, VirtualBox and Firefox. If somebody has experience in compiling Firefox for Qt3, any help welcome. - OpenSUSE maintainers, what's your opinion about possibility to include KDE3 option to OpenSUSE? The basic part of KDE3 (including kicker, konq, ksysguard, kcontrol) is already included (to be precise, it was never removed from OpenSUSE), but the ability to logon on KDE3 is disabled. The status of KDE3 repository has improved considerably in recent times, so it may look reasonable to reconsider KDE3's status. To enable a user to install KDE3 on his system we need to include only a tiny package kdebase3-session which takes only 4 kb, this package includes the .desktop file for the session manager so the user could choose KDE3 on the logon screen. - Besides this one can consider including KDE:KDE3 repository in the list of community repositories along with the Education repo etc so a user could be able to install the full version of KDE3 from the community repo. - Some KDE3 packages (koffice, pdfedit) currently experience problems with building for Factory 32-bit architecture. This is not a KDE3 bug, but an issue of brocken zlib in Factory, it was also observed on other distributions. [opensuse-kde3] 11.2: KNotify crash on every login

I use KDE3 on 32 bit 11.2. I just did zypper dup yet again, which seems required more than weekly for many weeks now. Every login is accompanied by the login sound being cut short, and the KNotify window opening and reporting useless backtrace & "system configuration startup check disabled". [opensuse-kde3] KNotify - The KDE Crash Handler

[11.2 32bit. Just did zypper dup again. It seems the KDE3 repos get new builds nearly every day.] The application KNotify (knotify) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV). No backtrace. Can anyone tell from http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/Linux/xsession-errors exactly what is crashing or why, or better yet, how to fix or what to install to stop the crashing? This has happened on every login since installing 11.2 on a fresh partition but reusing the /home partition. Sound for this particular login has never worked right, but typically works as expected on another regular login or a root login. Google doesn't seem to find much on this subject that isn't from Ubuntu, and virtually nothing using search string "kde3 knotify sigsegv akode suse -kopete 11.2". -- "How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver." [opensuse-kde3] Anyway to prevent Quanta from overwriting standard.toolbar.tgz on upgrade?

Guys, I don't know if I have my config wrong or what, but on each Quanta upgrade, /opt/kde3/share/apps/quanta/toolbars/html/standard.toolbar.tgz gets overwritten. The problem is when you modify a toolbar, that is the file that holds the toolbar mods. As a workaround, I've just added a check to .bashrc to copy a saved copy of the standard.toolbar.tgz back in place if it is changed, but that doesn't seem right. Not a major deal by any stretch, but if anybody is ever in the code where this replacement happens, it would be good to add a check to see if standard.toolbar.tgz has been modified, and if so, install the new one as standard.toolbar.tgz.rpmnew (or something like that) Cheers. -- David C. [opensuse-kde3] Potential conflict: KDE > 4.5.3 will load KDEmod3 kicker, background & decorations

Ilya, all, Let me drop a note here to let you know of a problem experienced on Arch Linux with kde4 loading the kde3 kicker, background and decorations if both kde3 and 4 are installed. NOTE: This is NOT a SuSE problem right now, but I want to capture the information here, just in case this pops up in the future. Best I can tell, sometime in the kde 4.5.3 time frame is when this problem first appeared. I searched in vain trying to find out why in the heck kde4 loaded the kde3 kicker along with it's plasma panel and then proceeded to load the kde3 background and decorations (and dialogs in some cases) Repeated tests removing both ~/.kde and ~/.kde4 made no difference. Removing items from ~/.config/autostart made no difference. Removing /var/tmp/kdecache-user showed very unexpected behavior. If kde3 was installed, starting kde4 (with a new user account) would create both: /var/tmp/kdecache-<user>/ksyscoca /var/tmp/kdecache-<user>/ksyscoca4 and then for some reason kde4 appears to be loading settings for both. Removing kde3 & deleting /var/tmp/kdecache-<user> and then restarting kde4 was the only way to get kde4 to load on Arch without pulling in the kde3 settings. I don't know kde3 or kde4 well enough to know where or why this behavior occurred, but I have confirmed this behavior on 8 boxes, both i686 and x86_64. So let me reiterate, this is NOT presently a problem for openSuSE, but if it pops up, I want to give the community the benefit of the testing I have done. I have also opened a bug and kde.org on the issue to see if this can be cured by upstream tweaks.
