Yes to the imap, as at least if your client goes south you can just reset it up and resync. And with offline mode imap is quite responsive. And I was not joking about dropping kmail, its incredibly fragile now, and freezes and loses email if you just look at it funny. Which is a shame because it has a great UI and functionality - when it works. But for me email is one of thos things that has to be 99.9999% reliable. Use Thunderbird. It looks funky, but it just works and has some useful extensions.
