Will these still just be links from KDF? Or will this become a "real" development repository with "real" packages?
What do you exactly mean with "real" development repository ? At this moment all the packages in the KDE:Release:XY are real packages and no links to KDF. Of course all of them started out as links to KDF. Keep in mind that the KDE:Release:XY will be the "official" maintenance repositories for the KDE versions supplied in the supported openSUSE versions. KDE:Release:411 will be the official maintenance branch for KDE in openSUSE 13.1 (The same way as that KDE:Release:410 is for openSUSE 12.3)
Which KDE:Extra packages would be submitted to o:F, and hence included in the official distro? All of them? None of them? A random selection? If Amarok, Kaffeine, rekonq, kdevelop etc. were to suddenly disappear from the official distro, and require to add an unsupported, "rolling" OBS repo, that would be catastrophic.
For those applications that are moved from KDF to KDE:Extra, we will also move the defined devel project from KDF to KDE:Extra. It is NOT the intention to drop any package that is currently in openSUSE:Factory. As indicated one of the reasons to make these changes, is to distinguish between the KDE SC packages and additional applications. It would also make things easier to move new applications in KDE:Extra to openSUSE:Factory. However we shouldn't start overflowing Factory with all kind of applications, just because we can
On the other hand several current KDE:Extra packages deserve a place in the distro, e.g. KTP, Knights and Homerum.
Well, KTP is already part of Factory and was moved to KDF specifically for this purpose. And that is what we want to get ride off. There is no more distinction between community maintained and SuSE maintained. However on a repository level this is still the case. KDF represents everything that SuSE used to maintain and was pushed to Factory. KDE:Extra was the repository where the community could have additional packages. And this is what we would like to change. And in my feeling a split between the KDE SC packages and all others would give a nice clean cut.
I'm also concerned about only building KDF for o:F. I'd like to be able to test KDF at least on the latest supported openSUSE release - with KDE:Extra also built for the latest released openSUSE+KDF target.
I guess the question here would be what exactly does KDF mean for you ? I see two situations here (based on the current situation) : Situation 1) KDF is building KDE 4.11.2 and build for Factory and 12.3. KDE:Release:411 is building KDE 4.11.2 and builds for 12.3 and 12.2. Question here would be why do we build twice for 12.3 ? Isn't this wasting build power ? There are no differences on package level between KDF and KR411. Situation 2) KDF is building KDE 4.12 Beta 1, which is not build anywhere else. My proposal for situation 1 would be to disable the build for 12.3 in KDF. 12.3 users should use KR411 instead. For Situation 2 there are two possibilities. The first one is that we enable the build for 12.3 in KDF besides building for Factory. The second possibility is to create the KDE412 repository at the moment of Beta release and start building there for 12.3 and 12.2. I don't have any preference for either one, but maybe the creation of KR412 at Beta release is more appealing for additional users. If this is the preferred option, then why should be build KDF for any other distro version than Factory ? All other repositories are covered by the KRXY repo's.
Other than that I don't have any general problems with the proposal. For me as a user it means one less repository on my system (KUA), and as a contributor it means I won't have to maintain the links to KUA anymore.
KUA should disappear. As you indicated it takes time to maintain it and sometimes it doesn't have certain applications, etc. Moving all those applications in a single repository would ease maintenance and usability for the users.
