Felix,
You say KDE won't start, but it sounds like what you mean is KDM won't start (no GUI greeter).
Sorry, yes. I was tired when I wrote that.
If so, http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2012-01/msg00075.html may be the same problem, meaning you should try the same things suggested there, starting with a root login and executing "init 3; init 5" and/or changing PARALLEL_BOOT from yes to no in /etc/sysconfig/boot. If neither help, and startx from a normal user login also fails to bring up KDE, post back here /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output from 'hwinfo --gfxcard' or 'lspci | grep VGA'. Before doing any of the above, read the release notes if you've skipped that so far.
I tried setting parallel boot to "no", and that made no difference, but changing back to sysvinit from systemd by pressing F5 at boot did the trick, so I installed the relevant package to replace systemd with the traditional init system, and the machine boots just fine now.
Looking through my logs, there is no evidence of any problem in Samba or the Xorg log (no warnings or errors of any kind) so I assume I was encountering either some kind of race condition or a deadlock.
I hope that you'll open a bug report, so the problem can be investigated and fixed if needed. -- Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org
