knetworkmanager only lets you add connections if NetworkManager thinks you have a suitable network device. So I guess NM doesn't know you have wlan0.
Use nm-tool or cnetworkmanager to check what hardware NM is reporting.
I think I now found the source of the issue... when you setup your network in YaST you can chose to use traditional ifup method or networkmanager, I chose ifup. So this is why I may be unable to use Knetworkmanager, i just have to switch to Networkmanager in YaST.
