I'd expect that this problem will go away if you simply completely disable the randr extension in xorg.conf .
I looked for howto do this in man pages, couldn't find in xorg.conf or xrandr pages, and could find no randr page. How does one disable randr in xorg.conf?
http://www.google.com/search?q=disable%20randr%20extension&ie=UTF-8&... Second hit, for example.
I Googled for an answer myself, and found *an* answer (Option "NoRandr", which I seem to have correctly guessed works in Section "Device" for 11.1) in a discussion of the proprietary ATI driver. I didn't report back because I was hoping for this thread to include in the mailing list archives a response from someone who knows a pointer that doesn't require Googling, hopefully an exhaustive list of most or all possible xorg.conf options omitted from its man page, located somewhere in /usr. The 2nd hit on your Google results page offers in the context of proprietary NVidia drivers the following: Section "ServerFlags" Option "RandR" "false" EndSection That isn't intuitively helpful for non-proprietary driver nv, mga or intel users. The only hit on an opensuse.org URL among the first 30 is not on point. None of the info I've found anywhere so far tells anything about whether disabling is required in other than xorg.conf for :0, and none addresses disabling for non-proprietary drivers. If I could get better help locating definitive docs, then I could include a new section on the issue on http://en.opensuse.org/Users_FAQ#Graphics_Card_Drivers to make it easier for the next upgrader who's lost his virtual. :-) -- "Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain."
