I can print in all my KDE programs using kprinter as well, but you still need to choose Generic Unix as your facility rather than CUPS. Still a bug there somewhere with CUPS & KDE. It still uses CUPS to print, but you can't choose that in the kprinter dialog as it will Sig11 on you.
The problem is actually in QDNS- KDE can't find the CUPS server. The temporary fix is already in CVS and I believe have been back ported. There is no point in really fixing the problem since they are in the process of replacing QDNS.
