Hey, Most have been having trouble with the XFree86 4.3 RPMs. As did I, but picking at it eventually got it working. And the new changes are very noticeable. System: AMD Duron 800Mhz, Generic Trident video card, Samtron 76E 17" monitor. KDE 3.1 with liquid. All problems I had involved the fonts, as has been noted here. Clean, Helvetica, etc. still don't work actually. But switching these to other working fonts in various places like the control center, Konqueror, etc., took care of that. And the initial install causing no fonts to show on anything and superhuge windows was a bit scary. ;-) That is apparently the only problem I've had, though. Probably because of the generic video card. I highly recommend this upgrade for generic video card users, if you're willing to go through and adjust all your font settings, and have other fonts like Arial and such installed to fall back on. Why? Changes I've noticed: - I can now use 24bit color. (Could only get 16bit with 4.2, 24bit caused white lines and such.) - I can now use 1280x1024 screen size. (4.2 wouldn't handle this, though it worked fine in Win98SE. Max 1024x768 with 4.2) - The new Sax2 actually recognized my Samtron 76E monitor. Had to do a lot of fine tuning to adjust the screen properly before. Default settings for the monitor worked perfectly. Never had an easier time with monitor/resolution settings. - Full screen games and such would seriously mess up the screen when turned off before. Now I can use full screen games without that happening. (Not sure if that was my own fault, and Sax2 recognizing my monitor now set it up properly or what.) - Faster, faster, faster. It seems like all programs are generally running faster. Some slightly noticeable, others... Well, Clanbomber and Pingus didn't work well in 4.2. I can actually play them now. That's a definite improvement. Overall, the experience is just plain breathtaking. :-P Okay, that's exaggerating, but it's very sweeeeeeeeeet. The only problems I have now are just font issues: - Several fonts not working at all (everyone seems to be reporting this). - Can't seem to get KDE help files text to show, not in the Help Center or in KDevelop's user manual... and I've changed all the settings I can find. But it's online so I'm not concerned about it. Everything else is working fine, and as noted above *much* better than before. YMMV. Obviously those with "fancy" graphic cards will have more problems, but since the majority of posts have been negative, I thought I'd chime in with some positive results from 4.3. Of course the whole Font issue is just... someone should have noticed that before publishing the RPMs. But griping over unsupported RPMs is just... eh. Joe
