1. why not hook onto RbConfig::CONFIG['libdir']?
it has the value for us already :)
then only the goarch stuff would need to be in the conditional
2. we could get the BUILDROOT and stuff from the environment ... no
need to guess it. or am I missing something?

This is not a really good user experience.
how about we set:
export GOPATH="~/go/"
then the user can still overwrite it in their profile but at least the
command above works out of the box.
