Re: [opensuse-gnome] Re: [opensuse-artwork] Sonor

(I'm not on opensuse-artwork, so I wasn't aware of this discussion and I
guess my mail won't reach the list there :/ -- feel free to forward it)

Hi Again Marcus,

Probably best you discuss this on opensuse-gnome (cc'd)

There was discussion at the GNOME 3 session at oSC which decided that it was
highly likely we will be using the default theme in 12.1, but perhaps with
Sonar-GTK3 packaged as an option

Since then, half-left, the person behind the Sonar-GTK3 port has got involved
and is actively working to get Sonar working satisfactorily on GNOME 3.2.
At this stage, my opinion would be that it is possible, though unlikely, that
Sonar-GTK3 will be ready enough to be considered to be the default for 12.1.
My creation of 'sonar-friendly' versions of my wallpapers was just my small
effort to help half-left along.

AFAIK no "official" decision has been made.

I don't think the themes available or chosen by default by a DE should be a
decision exclusively made by the -artwork team..

Hi all.

As we seem to tend to use a blue wallpaper this time, I would like to
propose NOT to use Sonar anymore.

Imho, Sonar was never really beautiful, It's way to dark and has some
strange colors.

I would rather like to stick with the GNOME 3 default theme which is
Adwaita. This one is compatible with nearly every design.

PS: I know Vincent likes Sonar a lot, but I think he could also live
with Adwaita (listening to his GNOME heart :))

Thanks to Richard for stating the current state on the default theme.
FWIW, here's my summary of the default theme discussion for GNOME:

- I've been willing to go with Adwaita for a while for various reasons
(the most important one being that it was designed to work well with
GNOME 3). But this was just my opinion, and various people wanted to
see Sonar for GTK+ 3 first.

- there's now a port of Sonar for GTK+ 3. It currently has issues, but
the developer is looking at them, so things will likely get better.

- on a general note, writing a GTK+ theme is not as simple as it might
look: it has to work perfectly fine with all applications, which is
often not the case.

- we'll discuss this default theme topic further once we get the fixed
Sonar. I have a personal opinion here ("stay on the safe side"), but
it's not a strong one.

- in all cases, we should have Sonar packaged -- I've already packaged
it in my branch, we'll push it once it has a few more fixes.

Richard also raises the point that the default theme should not be
decided by the artwork team only. I'm personally willing to have
that work done by the artwork team, but I think Richard has a point:
both the GNOME and KDE teams likely feel strongly about the default look
and feel of the desktop, and if they don't like the result, they will
have a hard time accepting it :-) So I'd suggest making sure there's
buy-in from the desktop teams.
