The file system is supported by all modern operating systems, including Windows, BSD, MacOS X, Solaris, OS/2|eComStation, BeOS|Haiku as well as Linux kernel, making it one of the best choices to use when transferring data between platforms. UDF also has optional built-in ability to minimize wearing-off of rewritable media with limited rewrite cycles such as flash, CD-RW and DVD-RAM by evenly distributing load over the media, including access to the allocation table. Despite this Yast2 partition manager does not suggest option to format a volume into UDF, thus forcing to use a mkudffs command line tool. But take into account that so far CDs and DVDs are not listed in the YaST Partitioner. So, a minimal change that could be ready on time (and I'm not promising anything) would be making it possible to use UDF in the devices that are currently listed in the Partitioner. CD and DVD support in the Partitioner is something I wouldn't bet my money to see in SLE-15-SP1. #3: Jeff Lindholm (jlindholm) (2018-11-20 13:02:13Z) (reply to #2) Use case that I envisioned around escalating this late request was initially focused on flash drives and other removable "disk" media that are +RW in nature. Agree that support for +RO media, CD/DVD/BLU-RAY, is out-of-scope and a separate request. Customer that triggered the need for this request was the USA Federal Government. Some parts of the government unfortunately need their software delivered on physical disk and/or +RO media (DVD/Blu-Ray.) I needed to create media that included the +6GB Packages ISO for SLE15 as part of the files being sent to the customer. +4GB files are a problem for any type of FAT/FAT32 formatted USB drives. Depending on the software and configuration options being used, +4GB files can also be a problem for iso9660 DVD media. Choices for file system formats that are interoperable with MacOS and Windows are limited. EXFAT is FUSE on Linux, proprietary, and not something we can ship with SLE. Linux Filesystems are not able to be read in any meaningful manner on MacOS/Windows10. MacOS and Windows10 are now supporting UDF formatted devices. SLE12 SP3+ and SLE15+ also include L3 supported UDF kernel modules. My proposal is to select a set of “sane” defaults and automate the formatting of UDF filesystem on disk devices via partitioner.
