Feature changed by: Anomyous Anomyous (jcat123) Feature #309662, revision 6 Title: GNOME 3 - Keep GNOME 2 Package Wishlist: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Important Requested by: Anomyous Anomyous (jcat123) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: When KDE4 came out, there were a lot of bugs and headaches. Many people used the more stable KDE3 option while others explored KDE4. Doing the same for GNOME in openSUSE 12.0\11.4 (whichever is after 11.3) would be wise. Move GNOME2 to another directory like /opt else like with KDE3 and have GNOME 3 in its directory or vice-versa. Since other distros didn't do the same with KDE3\4 they probably won't with GNOME 2\3 either, which would potentially give openSUSE an advantage and bring in more users. Discussion: #1: Stephen Shaw (decriptor) (2010-06-03 16:07:44) GNOME 3 isn't a complete rewrite of GNOME 2 like KDE 4 was of KDE 3. A lot of GNOME 3 will be the same as GNOME 2. I imagine that some of the old stuff will still be available so you can opt out of some of the new features like gnome-shell back to gnome-panel. Vuntz would be able to best comment on this though. #2: Martin Kohn (pmartink) (2011-05-03 19:15:37) I also do not understand the advantage of gnome3, if i want a desktop like it is in gnome3 i will buy a mac. #3: Vincent Untz (vuntz) (2011-07-19 12:04:00) We don't have enough resources to keep maintaining GNOME 2 at the same time as GNOME 3. So unless a small team steps up to do that work, it won't happen. However, there are people interested in tweaking what is called the fallback mode to offer an experience really close to the GNOME 2 one. That's what we can do, imho. + #4: Anomyous Anomyous (jcat123) (2011-08-12 20:49:16) (reply to #3) + Is there a way a non-programmer can help with this? -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/309662
