I think this is an upstream X11 issue that.

Upstream developers are paid by someone. IIRC that feature was
developed by a Novell employee.

To have the native multitouch support, we need:
* a recent X (I guess this should be okay?)
* support in toolkits: gtk+ is done in a git branch (I doubt we want to
ship a branch, though), not sure about qt
* support in apps

The support should land in the next major version of GTK+ (so it should
be in for the release after openSUSE 11.3)

+ Qt has implemented multitouch and supporting gestures in a branch but
+ are waiting for Xorg "to standardise the feature" before it is
+ merged.  I'm not sure what that means.
+ Plasma supports multitouch for widget manipulation already, and
+ multitouch zoom works in most KDE apps (on eg Windows where Qt has
+ multitouch...).
